Before Facebook, I was an active member of Friendster and my only active account in all of my social networking accounts. But after discovering Facebook and its cool features, I decided to switch from Friendster to Facebook.
Basically, social networking sites must have their own unique features not only to be able to provide its members a better service and draw new members but also to be a competitive website in the industry of social networking. For me, Facebook provides features that is much better than others and gives its members a really great service.
So what are these cool features that makes me decide to switch? What makes Facebook much better than others?
1. Publisher – it is the main feature of facebook that lets its users post information and messages which appear on the user’s own Wall, on their friend’s Walls, as well as the News Feed on the Home page.
2. News Feed – it mainly consist of different updates, it highlights information that includes profile changes, upcoming events, and birthdays, among other updates. News Feed also shows conversations taking place between the walls of a user’s friends. An integral part of the News Feed interface is the Mini-Feed, a news stream on the user’s profile page that shows updates about that user. Unlike in the News Feed, the user can delete events from the Mini-Feed after they appear so that they are no longer visible to profile visitors.
3. The Wall – The Wall is a space on each user’s profile page that allows friends to post messages or comments for the user to see while displaying the time and date the message was written. Similar to Friendster’s Comment Feature but it is more cooler and better because its features are expanded.
4. Photos – one of the most popular application of facebook where users can upload albums of photos, tag friends, and comment on photos.
5. Notes – a blogging feature of facebook. It allowed tags and embeddable images and even import articles from some popular blogging services.
6. Gifts – a virtual gift. It lets the user could send a virtual gift to a friend.
7. Status – A micro-blogging features which allows users to inform their friends of their current whereabouts, actions, thoughts and etc.
8. Events – a way for members to let friends know about upcoming events in their community and to organize social gatherings.
9. Video – this is one of my favorite. It lets its members to post/share videos to friends. It allows importing videos from someĀ popular video sharing services such as Youtube.
10. Chat – a feature I most like. It lets its members to chat with their online friends.
11. Notifications – a core feature that alert its members for any notifications.
12. Easy Fan Page Set-up – its similar also to fan page of friendster but the better thing about facebook fan page is that anyone can make their own fan page without requesting for approval prior publishing, but should remain under its Terms of Service.
13. Interface – great simple interface design and ordering of applications.
14. Lastly, AJAX powered – I really like facebook because most of its features are AJAX based meaning you don’t have to refresh the page in order to get results, it will simply update the page in real time!
